Risk Management is responsible for developing and deploying the risk frameworks to allow the Group to take conscious exposures to credit, market, operational, compliance and insurance risks within a Board-approved appetite.

Risk Management ensures the Group has appropriate strategies and frameworks in place to assess, manage and report on credit, market, operational, compliance and insurance risks.

Risk Management has policy teams that specialise in credit, market, operational, compliance and insurance risks as well as business unit facing teams. These areas collaborate with each other and specific areas within the Group to implement the Risk Management frameworks.

Credit Strategy and Analytics in Business Bank Risk seeks to:

  • Use data, analytics, risk management practices and commercial acumen to build models and tools across the credit lifecycle

  • Build and leverage credit capabilities to enhance reporting and data visualisation;

  • Support Auto-decisioning and strategy development in small business lending;

  • Simplify credit processes with data driven insight;

  • Advise, support and challenge the financial risk environment, credit strategies and significant initiatives within Business Banking.

As a Data Scientist, you will be part of the team to drive improved customer and business outcomes through the delivery of world class models that are used to strengthen the lending decisions being made and the productivity of the risk assessment processes used for our customers. With a focus on ongoing model management and business aligned insight and reporting, ensures that predictive statistical models used to make lending decisions across Business Bank products are fit for purpose and to guide the trade-off between risk and reward in making these lending decisions. A strong focus on model improvement through innovative methodology and data use whilst maintaining appropriate oversight and adherence to policy and frameworks

Key Responsibilities

On a day to day basis, you'll:

  • Driving value through timely delivery of industry leading statistical models. Apply various techniques to effectively analyse and model data using large and complex datasets, including models that are fully compliant with all required policies and governance

  • Communicate analytical output to stakeholders and other team members, including proactively contributing to and encouraging the sharing of knowledge with team members and stakeholders

  • Ensuring outlined methodologies are followed, whilst also promoting the identifying and driving the delivery and embedment of continuous improvement initiatives

  • Conduct model reviews and governance activities to ensure that we are fulfilling our governance obligations.

  • Ensuring that the team is represented in a professional manner and the team’s modelling expertise and technical skills are well regarded

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully deliver projects including strong stakeholder engagement skills in order to understand key business objectives and to maximise the benefits within a project whilst ensuring timely delivery

  • Demonstrated experience of data/ science/ statistical / economic / financial modelling theory

  • Meticulous in work and concern for accuracy, completeness and appropriateness of solutions

  • Understanding and selection of appropriate analytical tools, considering accurate and achievable results

  • Ability to assess data for use and replace or revise where necessary and to provide actionable insights and appropriate recommendations within a defined project

  • Experience in R, Python.

  • Understanding the role that risk models have within the Bank including their relationship to the risk / reward trade-off, performance measurement, provisioning, capital and pricing
